[Class 51 (i)] In a method of insulating water-cooled furnace walls for water tube boilers, the insulation is applied in the form of one or more layers of panelling composed of butted slabs of non-plastic insulating material removably held in place by a system of strip metal banding secured by bolts anchored to the wall face and covering the joints of the outermost-layer of panelling. In the form shown the wall is built up from water tubes P enclosed between hollow wall blocks F and clamps secured together by bolts B. The spaces or cells within the blocks F are filled with a plastic composition p such as asbestos fibre and diatomaceous earth or with moulded blocks of insulating-material so as to form a flat outer surface. Against this outer surface is laid an inner layer of slabs I<1> of asbestos fibre or other insulating material, the edges being butted together at J<1>; a second layer of insulating slabs I<2> which break joint with the inner layer and are butted at J<2>; and a protective layer comprising slabs L of stiff material such as asbestos sheeting or millboard. The layers are held in place by a lattice of short strips S of sheet metal held at their ends beneath the tongues of star washers W secured by bolts b. The bolts b are anchored to the wall bolts B directly by screwing into or on to the bolts B or indirectly by means of washers or strips held by the bolts B and secured to or engaging the bolts b. In one form the bolts b are hooked to engage eyes in strips K formed with tongues k<x> which may be bent over to secure the slabs I'.
