'C.N.FORREST JOINT FOR STUCCO BASES Filed Sept. 25, 1925 Patented Aug. 2, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES N. FORREST, OF RAHWAYQNEW JERSEY ASSIGNOR TO THE BARBER AS PI-IAL'J. COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, CORPORATION OF WEST VIRGINIA.
JOINT non STUCCO BASES.
Application filed September 23, 1925. Serial No. 58,021.
My invention relates to joints for stucco base, such as described in U. S. patent to Applegate No. 1,138,069, and is applicable to both vertical and horizontal joints,
The flexible bituminous stucco base described in the Applegate patent is a material resembling mineral-surfaced bituminous roofing, and is made by saturating and coating bibulous paper or rag felt with bitumen and embedding coarse mineral granules in the bitumen while it is still soft. IVhen used for inside walls or partitions, this gritted"stucco base is nailed directly to studding, etc, as a substitute for lathing, and plaster is applied directly to it, when used outside, it is nailed over boards to afford a waterproof layer and hold stucco.
As described in the Applegate patent, both vertical and horizontal joints in this material are formed by cementing and nailing cover strips of the same material over abutting edges of the sheets to be joined. Such joints are thick and bulky, however, so as 'to interfere with good results when a thin coat of plaster or stucco is used; they are expensive, because of the large amount of bituminous cement required to fill the interstices of themineral granules in the-laps, and of the double row of nailing at-each joint; and they are often imperfect and not water-tight.
I aim to reduce the bulk or thickness of such joints, to make them more easily and at less expense, and to render them more secure. Other advantages obtainable through the invention will appear from m description hereinafter of select and pre erred embodiments. Instead of placing a separate course or strip of paper under the stucco base proper at joints, I form the joints by direct union of the base itself, without necessity for butt strips or the like. s
In the drawings, Fig. I is a perspective view of a joint in process of construction in accordance with my invent-ion.
Fig. II is a similar view illustrating another method of forming such a joint.
As shown in Fig. I, I dispense with butt 7 strips or overlapping of the sheets, and form the oint directly between their edges. As here shown, the sheets 89 to be oined may simply be butted edge to edge and nailed down to the underlying structure 10 at, the jo nts, and the jo nts then cemented by'application of a. bituminous adhesive cement along the junction and in the crack as at 11.
A suitable cement for this purpose consists of asphalt paintwith a suflicient amount of asbestos fibre to give it a paste-like consistency.
If preferred, such a oint as just described may be formed as shown in Fig. II,by applying the aforementioned adhesive cement to the underlying structure behind the abutting edges of the sheets 89 as at 12 and then nailing down the margins edge to edge. When the sheets are laidinto. the cement in this operation, it is applied to their rear surfaces; andwhen they .are pressed and nailed down, it squeezes and oozes out through the crack or junction between their abutting edges.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. The method of joining gritted bituminous stucco sheetsby direct union without intervening reinforcement which comprises applying cement to ungritted edges thereof, and uniting said sheets in planar, relation by edge to edge adhesion.
2. The method of butt joining gritted bituminous sheets by direct union without intervening reinforcement which comprises applying cement to the margins of such sheets at their rear surfaces, and nailing down such margins edge to edge and squeezing the cement out between the edges.
' 3. A joint for gritted bituminous stucco base comprising gritted sheets with butted edges and bituminous cement between and unitlng the edges thereof WltllOtlil any intervenlng reinforcement.
In testimony whereof, I have" hereunto signed my name atMaurer, N. J this 17th day of Sept, 1925,
CHARLES N. FORREST.
