Abstract

419,626. Turbine plant. WALKER, G. W. HIGGS-, Whitehall, Kingswinford, Staffordshire. Sept. 13, 1933, No. 25369. [Class 110 (iii).] In ship propulsion systems employing turbines, the high pressure turbine is arranged to rotate constantly in one direction and is geared to the propeller shaft through alternative drives giving forward and reverse rotation, each of which drive includes a fluid coupling. The high pressure turbine 1 drives a shaft 2 which through reduction gears 3 drives a shaft 4. The shaft 4 is connected through gears 6 with a sleeve on the propeller shaft 5 and with the driving member of a fluid coupling 7. It is also connected through gears 8 which provide reverse rotation with the sleeve mounted also on the propeller shaft 5 and secured to the driving member of a fluid coupling 9. The driven members of these couplings are keyed directly to the shaft 5. The high pressure turbine 1 has a control valve 13 and its exhaust passes by a pipe 14 to a valve box 15 and thence by a pipe 16 leading to the forward low pressure turbine or through a feeder 17 leading to the astern low pressure turbine. The valve 15 is connected with a servomotor control 11 and with the valve 10 which controls the selection of the fluid coupling required. When the change-over from the head to astern is being made a deceleration governor 18 is mounted on the shaft 4, this governor actuating through linkwork a valve 19 controlling the supply of fluid to the couplings 7, 9.
