Abstract
418,675. Sliding latches. SMITH & DAVIS, Ltd., and SMITH, H. F., Hampton Street, Birmingham. April 25, 1933, No. 12099. [Class 44.] A latch 15 cut from a strip of extruded brass, &c. is shot by a spring 20 of U, S, double S or safety pin form having one limb 29 engaging with an undercut shoulder 19 on the bolt and another limb 30 engaging with one side 11 of the latch casing, which is preferably bent up from a sheet-metal blank, the spring being arranged between the bolt 15 and the front 10 of the casing. The bolt may be operated by a handle 24 integral therewith and projecting from the wall 11 of the casing or by a handle 33 attached thereto and slidable in a slot 32 in the front 10 of the casing. A tongue 27 cut out of the casing to form an aperture 16 through which the bolt slides may be bent back to form a guide for the bolt. One or more ribs 23 may be formed on the bolt to limit its movement and the head 25 may be bevelled on one or both sides. In the form shown in Fig. 7, the spring is distorted laterally so as to hold the bolt against the front 10 of the casing. In a modification, the bolt, of which the head is bevelled on both sides, is formed without a handle and its sliding may be limited by ribs 23 integral therewith or pegs screwed into it.
