Abstract

416,928. Heating by electricity. KENDALL & GENT (1920), Ltd., and HALL, J. L., Gorton, Manchester. March 17, 1933, No. 8113. [Class 39 (iii).] In apparatus for hardening the teeth of gear wheels by electrodes, the wheel is mounted so as to be rotatable on a head between electrode carriers b, c which are adjustably mounted upon slides d on the frame e. The spur electrodes f, g are slidably mounted within their carriers and are urged forward by springs h. The slides d are normally forced apart by springs h<1> and are moved towards each other by the operation of a foot pedal connected by ropes i passing over pulleys i<1> to the respective slides. Only one electrode may be used, the circuit then being completed through the body of the wheel. In a modification, Fig. 2, the wheel a is depressed to bring the tooth into contact with an electrode f, and in a further modification, Fig. 3, the flanks of the tooth, when depressed are brought into contact with electrodes f, f<1>.
