Abstract

Iron, nickel, or cobalt borides are prepared by mixing amorphous boron and the metal in stoichiometric proportions and sintering the mixtures in a vacuum at 800--1300 DEG C.ALSO:Sintered hard alloys are produced from a powdered mixture comprising tungsten carbide and up to 25 per cent of a boride of iron nickel or cobalt, the mixture being sintered at a high temperature, e.g. 1350-1400 DEG C. for the time mecessary for the production of the alloy. The mixture may be shaped under pressure, preferably at a high temperature, e.g. 1400 DEG C., and the sintering may be carried out in an atmosphere of hydrogen. The borides are produced by mixing amorphous boron and the metal in stoichometric proportions and sintering the mixture in a vacuum at 800-1300 DEG C. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that up to 30 per cent of the tungsten carbide may be replaced by titanium, tantalum, niobium, vanadium, zirconium, hafnium or molybdenum carbides. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
