[Classes 18 and 94 (i).] Cigarettes are packed by separately and completely enclosing each cigarette in thin flexible waterproof non-metallic material which is constructed so as to form tubular housings, the housings each containing a cigarette and being arranged in a row in a carton of cardboard or other thick material so that the cigarettes are packed close together and spaced apart a distance not appreciably greater (if at all) than the thickness of the intervening thin waterproof material and each housing being not substantially longer than the cigarette, of substantially constant cross section not substantially greater than that of the cigarette, and being provided with a closure portion ; the thin flexible waterproof material is preferably that known under the Registered Trade Mark " Cellophane." As shown each cigarette D is enclosed in one of a series of tubular housings B<2> formed by a folded sheet B<2> secured to a flat sheet A along the lines B<1>, the sheet A extending above the cigarettes so that the top A<2>, which has a corrugated strip C attached thereto, may be folded over the ends of the cigarettes to form the closure portions therefor ; the tubular housings may be extended to enclose the full length of the cigarettes when the strip C is omitted and the strip A<1> may be slit or perforated so that a portion thereof may be removed each time a cigarette is withdrawn. In another arrangement a corrugated sheet is secured between a pair of flat sheets to form the tubular housings and in a further arrangement the tubular housings are separately formed and packed close together in the carton ; each separate tubular housing may be formed of a cylindrical body with a closure or cap sliding thereon and the body and cap may be stiffened by end discs of cardboard.
