Abstract
409,318. Pole scaffolding. BENNETTS, J. H., Carisbrooke, The Grove, Finchley, London. Oct. 25, 1932, No. 29838. [Class 20 (ii).] A coupling unit for the structural sections of scaffolding, derricks, trestles and the like, consists of a sleeve or socket for attachment to a section, and a toothed, serrated or corrugated face or wing, or both, having clamping means associated therewith. Fig. 1 shows two coaxial tubes 7 interconnected by a unit 6 having upper and lower sockets 8 which embrace the tubes to which they are secured by transverse pins. The central portion of the unit is of angle section, having two serrated faces 9, 10, for clamping engagement with the serrated faces 4 of sleeved units 1 on transverse bracing members 3. The units have holes or slots 11 for receiving bolts 19 which clamp the units together. Additional transverse or diagonal bracing members 3 are attached at intermediate points to a tube 7 by a coupling unit 2<a> on which a serrated plate 14 is pivotally mounted, the plate and unit being locked in the required positions by screws. In a modification, the unit comprises three serrated wings 20, 21, 22, Fig. 2. The wings 20 and 21 are bent from a piece of sheet metal which is formed with a bend 23 between the wings for engaging the tube or upright 7. The wing 22 comprises two plates 24, 25, which are hinged at 28 to the wings 20, 21, respectively and which are curved at 26 to embrace the tube 7. The two plates of the wing 22 are clamped together by bolts 29 which may be separate as shown or may be pivotally mounted on one of the plates. Other methods of interconnecting the hinged wings are also described. The transverse bracing members 3 may be secured to the coupling units on the upright tube 7 by a unit comprising two hinged sections which form a clamping sleeve 47, Fig. 2, and a wing 46, the latter being connected to a serrated face of the unit on the tube 7 by bolts which may serve also to clamp together the two leaves of the wing 46. The plane of the wing may be tangential to the sleeve or it may pass through the axis thereof. In a further construction, Fig. 9, the wing 51 is integral with one half of the sleeve 52 to which the other half is hinged at 54, the two parts being clamped together when in position by a bolt 53. In the modification shown in Fig. 12, a subsidiary coupling device is mounted on one of the hinged components 48b of a serrated wing. This subsidiary coupling comprises two channelled straps 62 between which is clamped a transverse tubular section by means of a bolt 63.
