Abstract

404,319. Pneumatic separating. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and RAY, A., Sneyd Collieries, Ltd., Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent. July 12, 1932, No. 19681. [Class 117.] In apparatus for separating dust and small particles from coal and other materials of the type in which a nozzle 8 blows a high velocity air current through a falling stream of the coal &c., and the air laden with dust &c. is directed up an upwardly extended duct 16 the cross-section and length of which are such that the velocity of the air falls to a steady value at which particles above a predetermined size fall out of suspension and down the duct, the cross-section of the duct is adjustable and an exit is provided at the lower end through which the falling particles pass to the main body of the coal &c. without having to pass through the high velocity air-stream. Preferably the duct 16 is of uniform rectangular cross-section and one side plate 17 is adjustable by a threaded rod 19 working in a nut 18 fixed to the plate, the lower edge of which bears on an adjustable cam member 22 to maintain the duct closed. The air stream is led from the separating chamber by a transverse duct 15 having an adjustable wing 28 and deflecting plate 37. The nozzle 8 has an adjustable lip 9 and the coal falls from a shelf 6 under control of a curtain of chains 7 and over anti-breakage shelves 14. In a modification a second nozzle for the further treatment of the coal and two adjustable transverse passages 15 leading to the upwardly-extending duct may be provided.
