Abstract

<PICT:0404005/III/1> <PICT:0404005/III/2> In the washing of oils or benzol or other motor fuels the oil and washing liquid e.g. sulphuric acid or alkaline solution, are passed in contact through an elongated confined space where they are divided into discrete portions and subjected to agitation or pulsation such as to cause the transfer of liquid from one portion to another. Suitable apparatus comprises a treatment vessel 1 fitted with vertical baffles which extend alternately from the top and bottom and thus divide liquid into portions. The vessel is provided with inlets 2, 4, and outlets 3, 5 for the lighter and heavier liquids respectively. Pulsations communicated through a pipe 9 from a plunger reciprocating in a cylinder cause agitation of the several portions of liquid and the transfer of liquid from one portion to the adjacent portion, effecting a countercurrent flow. Liquid may pass to the inlet 2 through a bubbler tower 6 and sight glass 7 and may be discharged from the outlet 3 through a settling vessel 8. The vessel 1 may be built up of pipe sections each of which is formed with one baffle. Modified constructions of the vessel 1 are described, in one of which the vessel takes the form of an undulatory tube and in another that of a helical tube. Fig. 12 shows an alternative arrangement for the supply of liquid from the tower 6 to the inlet 2. The liquid enters an open vessel 21 having an overflow 22 through a pipe 20 and passes to the inlet 2 through U-tubes 23 connected to the pulsator by a pipe 24. The U-tubes may be replaced by a siphon.
