[Class 80 (ii).] A universal joint for motor vehicles comprises shaft-spiders 2 directly engaging at their ends 3 rubber driving-blocks 4 of rectangular cross-section and enclosed under considerable axial and circumferential pressure in a common annular chamber formed by a two-part sheetmetal casing 5 held together by axial bolts 6. The driving-faces of the spider-ends 3 are concave and bear on complementary convex end-faces of the rubber blocks 4. The internal surface of the casing and the external surface of the blocks 4 are spherical about the centre of the joint, the casing being centred on the spiders with the interposition of sphericallyground anti-friction plugs 11 of " Jurid " let let into the spider-ends 3, which latter are also provided at their sides with similar bearing- plugs 12 having a transverse cylindrical curvature. The rubber blocks 4 have rounded corners and internal, and/or external longitudinal grooves 8, 9 to prevent the rubber flowing into the casing-joint. They also have, in the uncompressed state, transverse grooves at their inner corners. The rubber may be hardened near its ends by vulcanising fabric to it, or by vulcanisation alone, or the entire blocks may be strengthened by embedded fibres of cotton.
