Abstract

395,072. Spray carburetters; two- and four-stroke-cycle engines. SLAUGHTER, T., 56, Park Side, Coventry. Feb. 23, 1932, No. 5315. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii).] In an engine using crank-case compression, and in which the pressure in the crank case is transmitted both to the tops of a float chamber and to a fuel supply tank, the communication between the crank case and the float chamber is opened and closed immediately prior to the opening of the cylinder inlet port, and is temporarily reopened at or about the closing of the inlet port. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, the crank shaft g of a two-stroke cycle engine is formed with an axial passage g<1> provided with ports g<2>, g<3> which register with the transfer passage d and with an orifice h<1> in the housing h, respectively. As the piston b descends air is compressed in the crank case until the port g<2> registers with the passage d and the port g<3> registers with the orifice h<1>. The pressure in the transfer passage is thus communicated to the top of the float chamber e and, if desired, through a pipe i<1> to the upper part of a float chamber j<1> in the petrol tank j. After the fuel injection, the pressure in the float chamber is released through a passage g<4> which registers with the port h<1>. An air pump k may be fitted to the fuel tank to maintain therein a pressure equal to the maximum pressure in the crank case. In a four-stroke cycle engine, the pressure is preferably applied to the fuel only once in two revolutions of the crank shaft by employing ports in the half-speed cam shaft, but the communication between the crank case and the float chamber may be established during each revolution of the crank case.
