Abstract

400,229. Valves. RICARDO, H. R., 21, Suffolk Street, Pall Mall, London. April 20, 1932, No. 11353. [Class 7 (vi).] In two-stroke engines of the liquid-fuel injection type, a thickened part of the sleeve valve is formed with inlet passages for the scavenging-air shaped so as to cause the air to rotate about the cylinder axis. The Figure shows a cross section through the thickened part B<2> of the sleeve valve, which is formed with passages B<3> which admit the scavenging-air as they are uncovered by the piston. The part B<2> works up and down in the scavenging-air belt formed around the cylinder, to which the passages B<3> are continuously open. The drive for the sleeve valve is connected thereto at or adjacent to the part B<2>, and may comprise a crank F giving the valve a combined oscillating and reciprocating movement. The valve preferably controls exhaust ports at the end of the cylinder remote from the scavenging-air passages, or, in the case of a double-acting engine, at both ends of the cylinder.
