Abstract

391,779. Shock-absorbers. LUCAS, Ltd., J. and PITT, H. W., Great King Street, Birmingham. Oct. 26, 1931, No. 29659. [Class 108 (iii).] A shock-absorber for motor vehicles includes a cylindrical body part a, a flexible reaction piece f adapted to form a fluid reservoir g in the body part and a vane d with which the reaction piece co-operates. The reaction piece f is made by bending a resilient metal strip or it is made from a pair of superimposed strips. In one form, the abutting ends of the strip are arranged over the vane and the gap k, Fig. 1, between them is closed by a thin cover strip l shaped, e.g. by the provision of gaps in its edges, so that the free movement of fluid within the reservoir is not impaired. Fluid passes from the reservoir g into working chambers h, i through non-return valves m and passage of fluid from either working chamber to the other by a restricted clearance between parts of the vane d and the reaction piece f which may be provided by making the piece f concave in the direction of the axis of the vane spindle and an additional small leakage may occur between the ends of the vane and the body part. The clearance between the parts f, d is regulated by a screw n which presses the parts together and which may also serve to close the filling aperture, washers o being provided to prevent leakage of oil. In a modification the strip l is dispensed with and the non-return valves consist of flaps r, Figs. 3 and 4, in a strip p coextensive with the piece f. In a further modification the piece f is formed integrally with the body part. The body part may be closed in the manner described in Specification 391,778.
