Abstract

459,221. Hydraulic shock-absorbers. BUGATTI, J., Molsheim, Bas.Rhin, France. March 30. 1935, Nos. 9981, 9982, and 9983. Void [A Abridged as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Oct. 1, 1935]. [Class 108 (iii)] . In a hydraulic shock-absorbing device for interposition between the body and axles of a rail or road vehicle, or for use in buffers, bumpers, machinery or between any pair of relatively movable elements, a reciprocating g piston, oscillating vane or like member is adapted to expel liquid from a chamber past a valved orifice or like braking resistance, the chamber being continuously replenished by means of a pump, preferably operating in a closed cycle. In the general arrangement shown in Fig. 2, a piston 2 connected with the vehicle body operates within a cylinder 1 mounted on the axle and, on being depressed, forces liquid past the braking means 7 and pipe 14 to a reservoir 10 from which it is redelivered to the cylinder chamber 4 by a pump 5 and pipe 6 against the effort of a spring or other resistance 13 opposing movement of the piston. The braking means 7 may be disposed directly in a pipe connecting the chamber 4 and reservoir 10, or may pass the liquid to the other side of the piston either externally, as shown, or through the piston itself. In order to limit the return movement of the piston, an overflow orifice and pipe 15 permit flow of liquid from the cylinder to the reservoir 10 when the piston reaches its upper limit, or if desired, a series of orifices 19, Fig. 6, adapted to be successively covered and uncovered by the piston may be provided. The orifices 19 may be controlled by spring- pressed balls 18 to form the braking means between the cylinder and pump, the pressure ou the balls being simultaneously regulated, or the balls may be replaced by adjustable needle valves or rotary cocks, adjustment being effected by hand, electrically, or by an auxiliary hydraulic control. An arrangement may also be incorporated whereby the relief passage is opened at a variable pressure in the cylinder chamber corresponding with that imposed by the piston. Thus, as shown in Fig. 16, the relief passage 54 is controlled by a spring-pressed valve 55, upon which the pressure is varied by a sliding wedge 58 actuated by a piston 59 subject to the pressure in the chamber 4. In other constructions described the piston is replaced by other movable members such as a flexible diaphragm or oscillating vanes. In the case of a motor-vehicle the liquid employed may be the lubricating oil for the engine.
