Abstract

205,086. Guillon, W., and Morize, H. Oct. 4, 1922, [Convention date]. Cataracts.-A hydraulic shock absorber, chiefly applicable to the suspension of motor vehicles and arranged to retard or damp shocks in both directions, comprises a circular casing a divided into three chambers by means of a fixed partition f and two movable partitions g, h carried by a drum d, d<1> capable of movement in a rotary direction. Within the drum d, d<1> a disc l is secured to the casing so as to leave a crescentshaped space m which communicates at parts of the movement with the three chambers through apertures k<1> - - k<4>. Chambers A, B also communicate with one another through a variable restricted duct j, Fig. 3. The fixed partition f is provided with ducts q closed by flap valve p controlled by a spring o and the movable partition h may also have a valved duct r. The drum is rotated in the direction of the arrow F, Fig. 2, on a shock compressing the liquid in the chamber A. This liquid flows into chamber B through restricted duct j, so damping the shock and towards the end of the stroke, liquid also passes from chamber A to constant volume chamber C through ducts k<1>, k<2> and space m. If the shock is severe the pressure in the chamber A will force the valve p off the ducts q. On the return stroke the liquid returns through the restricted duct j, so retarding the motion and also towards the end of the stroke to chamber C through ducts k<3>, k<4> and space m. The leakage liquid passes into a space u having a packing v, and is returned to the chamber C through apertures a.
