Abstract

391,140. Metallic packings for stuffing- boxes. LAMONT, B. N. R., 23, St. Philips Road, Surbiton, Surrey. Oct. 16, 1931, No. 28840. [Classes 122 (iii) and 122 (v).] In securing a pipe P to a socket member 2, the end of the pipe abuts against a flange 4 on a sleeve member S formed on its outer surface with circumferential grooves 3 and the sleeve is compressed axially by a nut 1 to distort it and form on its inner surface ridges 5 opposite the grooves 3. If the bore of the socket member 2 is conical, one face of the flange 3 is coned to fit it. The ridges produce minute air chambers 6. Where two plain pipe ends are to be connected, each end is provided with a flanged sleeve S and in either case each contacting surface of a sleeve may be roughened by concentric grooves to ensure a fluidtight joint when the sleeves are compressed. The flange on the nut which engages the sleeve may be conical on its inner face to press down the end of the sleeve on to the pipe or an interposed coned slip ring may be used for the same purpose. The pressing is facilitated by providing the sleeve with a thin outer edge either by increasing the internal or decreasing the external diameter of the sleeve or by forming it as described in Specification 340,074, [Group XXVIII]. When the pipe and socket member are of the same internal diameter, the flange is made of the same diameter, but when the pipe is of smaller diameter, either the flange 4 is omitted and the pipe extends into the socket or else the sleeve is of stepped formation to engage inside the socket and the pipe, a leather washer being interposed between the shoulder on the sleeve and the end of the socket member. In another form the sleeve comprises upstanding flanges 18, Fig. 10, between which are wide grooves 17 or several smaller grooves. The sleeve may comprise a flat metal strip bent into a ring with its ends abutting along an oblique line or otherwise. To adapt the coupling to make a stuffing box joint, the sleeve is formed with circumferential grooves on both its inner and outer surfaces, the grooves being in staggered relationship.
