Abstract

390,661. Seats. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-, 28, Southampton Buildings, London. - (McKay Co. ; 1005, Liberty Avenue, Pittsburg, U.S.A.) May 18, 1932, No. 14192. [Class 52 (ii).] A chair, settee, or like seating structure built wholly or partly of resilient material consists of a pair of frames each including a front leg 20, Fig. 1, a rear leg 21 inclined upwardly in a forward direction, a side bar 22 connected to the legs and extending rearwardly and upwardly therefrom, and two removable cross-bars, one 25 connecting the upper ends of the side bars 22 and the other 30 connecting the forward sides of the frames. The seat may be a canvas or other flexible strip 33 secured at its ends to the cross-bars 25, 30, or may be of cushion or box-spring form 49, Fig. 10, having on its bottom serrated bars 50 allowing it to be adjusted to various positions on the lower cross-bar 51, a canvas strip 48 being secured to the seat 49 and to the upper cross-bar and forming the back. The frame may be formed of spring metal bars made so as to yield slightly when used and may be chromium plated or enamelled. The side bars 22 form arm rests, or separate arm rests may be secured to the side frames, Fig. 8 (not shown), in which case the front leg and side bar of each frame may be made of a single piece of metal. The lower ends of the front legs 20 may have rubber &c. blocks 36 and the rear legs 21 may have rollers 35 to facilitate flexing, or the lower ends of both legs may be bent to runner-like form 52, 53, Fig. 10. In another form, the front and rear legs 20a, 21a, Fig. 15, are connected by braces 63. The upper ends of the side members 22 and the forward ends of the rear legs 21 are formed in loops for reception of the cross-bar 25, 30. The cross-bar 25 has near each end a bead 26, Fig. 5, against which the loop is locked by a nut 28 engaging a tie-rod 27 extending through the cross-bar, or by a nut which screws on an internal or external thread on the cross-bar. In another form, the loop is secured by a bolt 43, Fig. 9, which screws into a sleeve 44 secured to the cross-bar by a key pin 45 and locks the loop against a collar 46 also secured by the pin 45. A number of the chairs may be connected together by providing in the cross-bars 54, Fig. 12, connecting- rods 55 the ends of which are threaded and each pair of adjacent ends engaged by a doubleended cap nut 56.
