Abstract

389,157. Discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Hitchcock, W. J. ; 203, Alexander Avenue, Scotia, New York, U.S.A.) Sept. 22, 1931, No. 26481. Convention date, Sept. 23, 1930. [Class 39 (i).] An electrode operating normally as anode is surrounded by a shield having a restricted opening of a diameter of the order of 10 mils so that the entry of metastable atoms is prevented without hindering the discharge. A lamp 1, Fig. 1, containing neon at 1 mm. pressure and having a cathode 2 and heater 3 has anodes 8, 9 preferably of graphite, nickel or tungsten surrounded by housings 14, 15 of nickel, iron, or mica and having restricted openings 16, 17, Fig. 2, which allow the discharge to pass without undue heating of the housings. Baffle plates may be provided in front of the opening. In a lamp containing neon at 15 mm. pressure, and working on 110 volts, the distance between anodes and cathode is 18 inches and the tube is one inch in diameter. The anode housings are of 50 mil. nickel sheet and have openings of 12 mils. diameter. Other fillings, e.g. helium, argon, nitrogen may be used. The anodes 8, 9 are connected through resistances 26, 27 to the ends of a transformer primary. A secondary 28 provides current for the heater 3. The cathode 2 is connected in series with an electromagnet 33 to a neutral point of the primary. When the electromagnet is energized a circuit is broken in the mercury switch 34, thereby impressing a high inductive starting voltage upon the lamp. Specification 263,111, [Class 39 (i), Electric lamps, Arc &c.], is referred to.
