Abstract

388,834. Spring-balanced sashes ; draught-excluders. MADSEN, S., 12th Avenue, South, Clinton, Iowa, U.S.A. Sept. 14, 1931, No. 25736. [Class 20 (iii).] Sliding sashes of the kind which are balanced by springs have metal weatherexcluding strips housed in grooves in the vertical stiles, which resiliently and frictionally engage grooves with or without linings 21 in the frame. The balancing springs 35 may be housed between the curved limbs 23 of the strips E, Fig. 2, or in grooves in sash and frame and partially in a bead, Fig. 10. The springs are inclined, to prevent noise. Strips of various shapes are shown, and they are anchored to the sash by a bracket screwed to the top rail and provided with a projection 26, Fig. 3, of suitable shape to hold the strips. At the lower end, a staple may be used to fix the strip or a bracket 31 on which the balancing spring may be also held, Fig. 5. The spring tension is adjusted by varying the end fixing 37, Fig. 1, - so that the sash is balanced when opened half-way and the friction between the strip and frame is sufficient to hold the sash in all other positions.
