Abstract

An aluminium alloy containing magnesium, chromium, manganese, and titanium is prepared by adding to a bath of molten aluminium a quantity of chromium-aluminium alloy rich in chromium and thereupon adding separately a manganese-titanium-aluminium alloy, rich in manganese and titanium, and metallic magnesium. The alloy is refined by introducing into the bath the vapour of boron trichloride or other volatile halide such as vanadium tetrachloride, or the oxychloride of a metal such as vanadium having a grain refining influence on the alloy, along with free chlorine, as described, for example, in Specifications 272,326, [Class 82 (i), Metals, Extracting &c.], 351,177, and 352,671. In an example the alloy contains 0,1-1 per cent of chromium, 0,2-2 per cent of manganese, 0,1-1 per cent of titanium, and 0,5-5 per cent of magnesium, the remainder being aluminium with or without small quantities of boron or vanadium or other metal introduced by the refining operation.
