Abstract

382,627. Universal joints. VILLARD, M., 70, Rue de Colbert, Colombes, Seine, France. July 21, 1931, No. 20819. Convention date, July 26, 1930. Addition to 372,490. [Class 80 (ii).] The compensated single Hooke's joint of the parent Specification is provided with automatic means to give the cross member its compensating displacement. The cross member is formed as a shell 4, carrying a pin 5 engaging a radially slotted aperture 12 in a ball shaft member 3, and also pivoted on pins 8, 9 in a complementary socket member 2. The shell 4 receives freely in a circular aperture a compensator 7 carrying pins, one 10 projecting inwardly into a circular groove 13<1> in the ball 3, the other 11, outwardly into a groove 14 in the socket member 7. The pins 10, 11 are equidistant from the centre of the compensator 7 and cause a displacement of the pin 5 about the axis of the pins 8, 9 corresponding to half the angle included between the shafts when turned about this axis, to preserve the unitary velocity ratio. The joint may be used for driving steering wheels of motor vehicles, the centre of the joint being preferably located in the median plane of the vehicle wheel.
