Abstract
Mercaptophenols are prepared by heating a dihydroxydiphenylsulphide or a monohalogenphenol with a mixture of alkali sulphide and alkali hydroxide. Examples are given of the conversion of 4 : 4<1>-dihydroxydiphenylsulphide and p-chlorophenol to monothiohydroquinone, 5-chloro-o-cresol to 5-mercapto-o-cresol, and o-chlorophenol to monothiocatechol, using sodium sulphide and flake caustic soda in each case. Specification 173,313, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], is referred to.
