Abstract
3-Nitro-3<1>-amino-4 : 4<1>-dialkoxydiphenyls are made by reducing the corresponding 3 : 3<1>-dinitro compounds preferably in solution with a slight excess of an alkali hydrogen sulphide, an alkali sulphide or an alkali polysulphide at an elevated temperature. In examples(1) 3 : 3<1>-dinitro-4 : 4<1>-diethoxydiphenyl is refluxed in alcoholic solution with alcoholic sodium hydrogen sulphide obtained by adding hydrochloric acid to alcoholic sodium sulphide, (2) the corresponding 4 : 4<1>-dimethoxy compound is reduced as above.
