Abstract

378,550. Lineardimension gauges. ALDEBORGH, E. H., 136, South Hamilton Street, Poughkeepsie, New York, U.S.A. May 19, 1931, No. 14786. [Class 106 (ii).] An internal gauge comprises a base member provided with a dial indicator combined with means for holding and self aligning pieces of work independently of the gauging means. A casing 10 is formed with a base 11 and an inclined top 12 which receives the stem 20 of a dial indicator 21 held by a thumb-screw 22 and split collar 23. A transverse cam shaft 25 extends through one or both sides of the casing and is provided outside the casing with a finger lever 26. The operating unit comprises a block 30 with a transverse slot 31 communicating with a slot 32 in the front face. Within the slot 31 is pivoted on centres 35 a gauging bar 33. Mounted in the slot 32 is a slide 37 provided with a projecting arm 38 having a downwardly projecting knife-edge 39, the slide being adjusted by a screw 40 and knurled head 43. The upper face of the block 30 is cut back to accommodate a slide 52 moving in guides over balls 51 and normally retained raised by two spring plungers 55 and by a spring 56 secured at one end to the slide and after passing through a bar 69 secured at the other end to a pin 59 resting on the bar. The slide 52 is integral with a work-locating arm 61 provided with knife-edges which cooperate with the knife-edge 39 to provide a three-edge adjustable work support. The arm 61 and slide 52 have a central opening in which swings the gauge arm 33 with contact 64 giving a true diametrical measurement between the contact 64 and knife-edge 39. In use, a master gauge is placed on the work supports and the arm 38 adjusted by the screw 40 to provide the proper tension of the arm 61 and the dial indicator is set for the desired reading. The finger lever 26 is then depressed. This rocks the shaft 25 and causes a cam to move the lever 33 withdrawing contact 64 within the arm 61 and by means for moving the part 75 the upper end of which engages the top edge of the slide 52 to move the arm 61 closer to the arm 38. The gauge is then removed and the work substituted, the finger being released to allow the arm 61 to rise and align the work. On sliding the latter further over the arms the contact 64 is depressed and the rear end of the arm 33 being in contact with the plunger 24 will operate the indicator. The arms 61, 38 may be reversed, the work resting on the arm 38.
