Abstract

462,336. Gauging alignment of connecting-rods. THOMPSON, J. W. Sept. 12, 1935, No. 25316. [Class 106 (ii)] Relates to apparatus of the kind comprising a shaft mounting for one end of the rod and a direct - reading indicator adapted to be operated by a two-point contact with the other end bearing or gudgeon pin, and consists in adjustably mounting the indicating mechanism in guides on the frame 1 of the device and adapting the mechanism to be turned through an angle of 90‹ or more, about an axis at rightangles to the pointer pivot. A frame 1 is provided at the lower part with a split bearing 2 to receive a mandrel 3 which is clamped by a screw 4. The forward end of the mandrel is provided with taper keys 6 engaging guideways in the shaft 3 and which may be expanded simultaneously outwardly by rotation of a disc 8 on a screwed rod 9 a detachable cap being provided with a pin to engage a slot in the end of the rod and so rotate it. The frame 1 has a vertical slot or guide 13 for an indicator plate 14 on which is pivotally mounted a pointer 15 normally at right angles to the axis of the mandrel 3 and reading zero. In use, the big end is placed on the mandrel 3 which is expanded out to fit it. An indicator operating member 16 pivoted at 16x is bifurcated to afford two spaced contacts lying in a line normally parallel to the axis of the shaft 3 and in the path of the gudgeon pin when the rod is rocked about the mandrel. The member 16 has a pin 15<y> which engages a notch in the end of the short arm of the indicating pointer. When the rod is moved so that the bifurcations engage the gudgeon pin, if the ends of the rod are not in alignment, the member 16 is rocked and the pointer 15 moved to one side or other of zero on the scale 14. The plate 14 may slide on ball bearings 17 and be moved into engagement with the gudgeon pin when the rod is held vertically with the same result. The plate is carried by a bracket 18 carried by a horizontal stud 19 working in the slot 13 and associated with a cam or lever whereby the bracket may be clamped in any position of angular adjustment about the axis of the stud. The plate 14 may be turned through say an angle of 90‹ and a test made with the plate in a vertical position. An L-shaped member 21 slidably mounted in a bearing 22 adjacent the mandrel 3 is adapted to be locked in any position by a set screw 23. The indicator mechanism may be moved to the top of the guide and the rod placed on the mandrel and swung over until the small end is opposite the machined face 13<x> whereupon, the member 21 is set with its outer arm touching the big end near the mandrel. The distance of the small end from the machine face is then measured with a rule and the rod reversed with the small end on the mandrel and the test repeated. Any difference in the measurements means that the rod is bent or cracked.
