Abstract
The mercurous salt of b --(2-thiolimidazolyl)-propionic acid is produced by adding mercurous sulphate solution to a solution of the acid.ALSO:b -Imidazolylpropionic acid is manufactured by reducing the ester of glutamic acid by means of sodium almagam to the semi-aldehyde of glutamic acid, treating this with a sulphocyanide to produce b -(2-thiolimidazolyl)-propionic acid, and desulphurizing this by the action of an oxidizing agent to yield b -imidazolylpropionic acid. The product is useful for the preparation of histamine. In an example, glutamic acid is converted into its ester hydrochloride, which is treated in aqueous alcoholic solution with sodium amalgam at -10 DEG C., the solution being kept acid with hydrochloric acid. The product is treated with a solution of potassium or ammonium sulphocyanide, producing b -(2-thiolimidiazolyl)-propionic acid. This is purified by forming its mercurous salt by addition of mercurous sulphate and decomposing this with hydrogen sulphide, and is suspended in water and treated with hydrogen peroxide, the b -imidazolyl propionic acid produced being purified by forming the barium salt and decomposing this with sulphuric acid. Alternatively, ferric chloride is employed as oxidizing agent, and the b -imidazolylpropionic acid is converted into its phosphotungstate, which is decomposed by barium hydroxide and the acid liberated from the barium salt by means of carbon dioxide followed by sulphuric acid. The chloroplatinate of the b -imidazolylpropionic acid is also described.
