Abstract

Benzylresorcinol is prepared by reducing, for example by means of zinc amalgam and hydrochloric acid, benzoylresorcinol. In an example resorcinol is condensed with benzoic acid by means of zinc chloride and the oily product washed with water and sodium bicarbonate solution, or alternatively precipitated from its solution in sodium carbonate by means of carbon dioxide. The resulting benzoylresorcinol is reduced by means of zinc amalgam and hydrochloric acid, and the product extracted and distilled in vacuo, and finally recrystallized from benzene or other solvent.
