Abstract

656,203. Vehicle brakes. BRITISH MESSIER, Ltd. July 19, 1948, No. 19362. [Class 103 (i)] A vehicle braking system which is arranged to prevent wheel slip, comprises a main wheel 16 with a main brake therefor, an auxiliary wheel 20 and an auxiliary brake therefor, and an arrangement such that by ensuring that the auxiliary wheel has a higher ratio of braking force to load applied to it than to the main wheel, and that the slipping of the auxiliary wheel actuates means to reduce the main braking pressure the slipping of the main wheel is thus prevented. In the invention as shown applied to an aircraft the auxiliary wheel 20 is carried by an arm 19 pivoted to a telescopic strut between two main wheels 16 the load being transmitted thereto by a spring 21. A toothed wheel 22 that rotates with the wheel 20 engages a pinion 26 the force on which, when no slip is taking place, compresses a piston 24 in a cylinder 23 against a spring 27 so that by a fluid pressure connection 28 to the main control unit 32, the valve member 39, 43 is able to be forced down by spring 42 and the master cylinder piston 34 is connected through to the wheel cylinders by conduits 30, 45. If wheel 20 slips, the spring 27 is able to force out piston 24 so that the valve member 39, 43 is raised to cut off the passages connecting the wheel cylinders and master piston.
