Abstract

374,115. Microphones. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and OLIVER, D. A., of General Electric Co., Wembley, Middlesex. March 4, 1931, No. 6739. [Class 40 (iv).] Relates to a condenser microphone of the type in which one part of the back electrode is impermeable and the remaining part is permeable to air and consists in forming the part which is permeable to air of conducting gauze. The back electrode may be constituted by a solid annulus, the central opening of which is covered with gauze, or alternatively by a solid disc surrounded by gauze, the solid central portion being preferably considerably smaller than the diaphragm. Such a microphone is stated to have a response curve high at both ends of the audible range but low in the middle. This curve can be improved if a peak is introduced at intermediate frequencies by providing a resonant air chamber immediately in front of the diaphragm by setting the diaphragm back a short distance from the front surface of the microphone according to the desired magnitude of the effect.
