Abstract

371,188. Controlling motor-cycle changespeed gearing. ELITEDIAMANTWERKE AKT.-GES., Erbisdorf, Brand, Saxony, Germany. May 19, 1931, No. 14737. Convention date, Aug. 23, 1930. [Class 79 (v).] In a motor cycle in which the change-speed gear is controlled by two pedals one for each foot, each pedal is locked in the neutral position as long as the other pedal is in the operative position. In the construction shown the gear box 1 has four speeds and is controlled by right and left pedals 6, 5, having stirrups 10, 9 acting on arms 14, 13 fixed to gear-controlling shafts 12, 11. The pedals are rocked fore and aft about their shafts 8 each pedal controlling two speeds. The pedal stirrups 10, 9 are slotted at 16,15 so that when the gear box is moved longitudinally along slots 4 to adjust the chain the connection between the pedals and the arms 14, 13 is not affected by this movement. The shaft 11 carries arms 27, 28 connected to a sliding clutch fork 31 which moves a clutch sleeve 25 into engagement, either with clutch teeth 19 for the direct drive or third speed, or with clutch teeth on a pinion 18 for the second speed. The shaft 12 similarly controls a clutch fork 32 and clutch 26 which can engage either the first or low-speed pinion 17, or the fourthspeed pinion 20, the last speed being an " overspeed." The interlocking devices comprise shafts 33, 34 on which are fixed guiding pieces 35, 36 and locking arms 37, 38. The guiding pieces are adapted to engage and be engaged by members 39, 40, connected to the gear forks 32, 31 so as to slide therewith. When a gear fork 32, say, is operated to engage a gear the member 39 acts on the guiding piece 35 and rotates the shaft 33, thereby causing the locking arm 37 to rise and engage a notch 41 on the arm 27 connected to the clutch fork 31 so that the arm 27 and clutch 31 are prevented from moving. The clutch fork 32 is similarly locked by the arm 38 when the clutch fork 31 is operated. Springs 42, 43 act on the shafts 33, 34 and return the locking arms 37, 38 to the inactive position.
