Abstract
Cellulose nitrate is obtained by nitrating with a mixture of nitric and sulphuric acids and water, irregular shreds of parchmentized paper, and thereafter washing the product with dilute alkali, preferably ammonia. The parchmentized paper may be obtained by treating unsized paper with sulphuric acid preferably 55-55,5 DEG B<\>ae., after which it is comminuted into strips of irregular, curved, corrugated or wavy form of about one-quarter inch wide and three to six inches long. The strips are preferably compressed into a bale of considerable density before nitration, which may then be carried out by the displacement method. The cellulose nitrate is washed with water to remove most of the acid and then boiled with water and finally with successive quantities of very dilute ammonia or other alkali until the wash liquid no longer turns yellow. The product may then be bleached using an alkaline agent, for example, alkaline sodium hypochlorite liquor.
