Abstract

365,901. Vehicle brakes. OETIKER, E., Altstetten, Zurich, Switzerland. April 20, 1931, No. 11638. [Class 103 (i).] A brake operating lever 2 has pivoted on the free end an auxiliary lever 3 connected to the brake gear G, and adapted to be moved to apply the brakes, and after a given deflection to unlock the main lever and lock it to the brake gear whereby pressure may be applied to the brakes. The lever 2 and a bell crank 5 connected to the brake gear G are pivoted side by side on a spindle 1. A locking bolt 7 is adapted to slide in a sleeve 2a fixed to the lever 2 and in brake release position its upper end engages a notch 4c in a fixed quadrant 4 and its lower end engages the boss of the bell crank 5, to lock the brake lever. A pivoted pawl 9 is adapted to move in a slot in the locking bolt 7 and is operated by means of a slotted connection by a rod 6 connecting the lever 3 and the bell crank 5. The lever 3 first applies the brakes by means of the rod 6 and the bell crank 5 and the pawl is pivoted to release the bolt 7 and render it free to engage a notch 5c in the boss of the bell crank 5 when this has moved far enough and so lock the levers 2, 3 together to apply pressure to the brakes. The lever 2 engages a stop on the quadrant 4 in release position. A modification is shown in which the lever may be locked in an intermediate position and comprises a spring urged pawl engaging a ratchet on the quadrant 4. The pawl is operated by a rod vertically slidable on the lever 2 and actuated by a spring-pressed rodin the lever 3. In a further modification the pawl 9 is integral with the rod 6. The invention is shown applied to a foot-pedal.
