[Class 87 (ii).] Thermoplastic m a - terials are moulded by heating the solid material until it becomes plastic, injecting it under pressure into a mould and subsequently, whilst still plastic, subjecting it to a second pressing operation whilst it is hardening in a closed mould without the application of heat. The plastic mass in the space b is injected into the mould by the piston c and is then subjected to a second pressure by the plunger e which moves in a direction substantially at rightangles to that of the plunger c. The bottom plunger f is supported by a spring g so that on the application of pressure the two plungers e, f move downwards and close the inlet opening whereby any irregularities on the surface of the article are removed and subsequent polishing is rendered unnecessary. An injection pressure of about 50 atmospheres is preferably used whilst the second pressure may vary from 100 to 200 atmospheres. The injection pressure may be produced mechanically by a piston or by water, air, or like pressure. Asphalt, cellulose esters, artificial horn, artificial resins, and vulcanite are mentioned as suitable materials.
