Abstract

355,366. Centrifugal machines. FAWCETT, H. W., 3, Kent Road, Harrogate. Feb. 27, 1930, No. 6594. [Class 23.] Density separators. - Peripheral nozzles or apertures for the discharge of separated constituents are provided with means whereby their available cross section may be varied to permit the discharge ' o f matter which would normally tend to choke up the apertures. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a conical valve member 2 moves in a discharge aperture 3 in the wall 1 of the drum. The member 2 is screwed to a spindle 4 to which is pivoted a spider 7 carrying a tray 8 with a central aperture 9. One end of a pivoted lever 10 bears against the outer side of the pivot 6 and the other end carries a weight 13 with an adjustable screw 14 to limit its inward movement. When the empty separator starts to rotate, the weight 13 is thrown outwards and the valve member 2 is moved inwards until the stop 5 arrests the movement. When liquid is supplied and the apparatus functions normally, sludge is discharged through the aperture 3 into the tray 8 and part passes through the aperture 9 while the remainder flows over the edge of the tray. The member 2 then occupies a position determined by the differential action of the centrifugal forces on the weight 13 and the sludge in the tray. If the aperture 3 becomes choked the supply of sludge will decrease and the sludge will pass out of the tray. The weight 13 then moves outwards and the member 2 moves inwards. The available cross section of the aperture 3 is increased and the obstruction is flushed away. The apparatus then resumes its normal position. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, the lever 10 is a bell-crank lever which gives an increasing retractive force on the valve member 2 as it moves inwards. The valve member 2 is a cylinder with a flat surface 2a and the parts are adjusted so that the sludge normally maintains a certain level in the tray 8. A spring or float may be used instead of the weight 13.
