Abstract

255,914. Garland, C. S., Hinchley, J. W., and Watson, C. S. Feb. 4, 1925. Density separators; discharging.-A centrifugal machine for separating solids from liquids has its bowl formed in two axially separable parts constrained towards each other by resilient means. A brake surface within the chamber suffers an increasing frictional drag as the solids are deposited and this causes the separation of the bowl members to discharge the solids. In the first example, Fig. 1, the two bowl members 5, 6 are of opposed conical form, the lower part 6 being supported on the bearing 7 and directly driven by any convenient means. The upper part 5 is carried by a web 9 on a boss 10 loosely fitting on the spindle 8. Secured to the boss is a flange 13 connected by spring rods or blades 14 to a similar flange 12 on a sleeve 11 secured to the spindle. The bowls rotate together, the spring rods allowing a limited angular movement of the top part in relation to the lower part. The brake surface is provided by a lip 16 at the lower end of a tube 17 which is attached to the casing. The mixture is supplied through the hopper 19 and passes through the trough 21 into the lower bowl 6. The liquids pass up the drum and are discharged over the lip 25 while the solids collect in the wedgeshaped pocket formed at the meeting edges of the bowl parts. When this deposit reaches the lip 16 the friction increases to retard the upper part 5. The screw connection between the boss 10 and the part 6 causes the parts 5, 6 to separate to enable the solids to be discharged. A hand-operated plunger 30 is provided to impinge on the part 6, so that the bowl parts may be separated for cleaning. In the modified form of apparatus shown in Fig. 2, the upper bowl part 5 is normally stationary and carries the brake surface 16. The part 5 is attached to a boss 40 in a screwthreaded engagement with the fixed tube 41. As the solids are deposited, the frictional drag on the surface 16 increases until it moves the top part 5; the rotation then causes the parts to separate for discharge of the solids. The part 5 is normally held by a spring 43 the tension of which can be adjusted by means of the nut 45. To enable the part 5 to be operated manually, a wire 50 is secured to the boss 40 and to a screwthreaded rod 51 engaging in a bush 52 in the casing, so that rotation of the rod turns the part 5 against the pull of the spring 43. In another modification the lower bowl part is fixed and is in the form of a flat disc; the upper part is dished and is rotatable. The brake surface is formed on the lower part, or it may be formed on an abutment which projects through the lower part and is arranged to move the upper part axially.
