[Class 83 (iv).] A rolling - mill comprises a pair of non-driven simple smooth cylinders a, a<1> without pivots, each supported by a pair of driven rollers b, b<1>. When the rollers b, b<1> are raised the top working roll is prevented from falling out by bearings f, Fig. 3, which can be pushed into end recesses e or by small trailing rollers d, two at each end of the roll and spring-pressed against them. The rolls a may have axial thrust bearings to retain them in transverse position. The operating rolls may be replaced by hollow rolls which may be directly driven by couplings g, e.g. A, Fig. 6, or the - couplings may be omitted. The driving shaft or spindle carrying the hollow roll may be long and thin to bend under stress. The operating rolls may be easily replaced by rolls of different longitudinal curvatures: The support rolls may have longitudinal curvatures in which case the operating rolls are straight longitudinally.
