Abstract

352,983. Supplying fuel by direct injection. PACKARD MOTOR CAR CO., 1580, East Grand Boulevard, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. March 11, 1930, No. 7941. Convention date, March 25, 1929. [Class 7 (iii).] Liquid fuel is circulated under low pressure in a closed circuit from which the charges for individual cylinders are withdrawn and injected under the necessary pressure. In an engine having radial cylinders 11, each with a single port for the inlet of air and exhaust, a low-pressure pump operated by the crank shaft is enclosed in a chamber 16, draws its supply from a tank 34 through a conduit 29, and delivers into a conduit 32 leading to a conduit 51 in such manner that the fuel travels always in an upward direction. The fuel injection devices for individual cylinders comprise a cylinder 39 in which a high-pressure pump plunger 40 is reciprocated intermittently from the crank shaft against the pressure of a spring 41 enclosed in a casing 38. Fuel flows from the manifold 51 through an extension 55 and a filter 56 to annular ports 42 which are uncovered by the plunger during its out-stroke. A check valve 43 is located in the duct leading to each injection nozzle. The pump associated with the uppermost cylinder is provided with an extension 65 through which fuel returns to the tank 34.
