350,031. Electromagnetic relays. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London, and PARRY, R. D., Pen Bryn, Northway, Neasden, Middlesex. Feb. 11, 1930, No. 4606. [Class 38 (v).] Electromagnetic switches; mercury switches.-An electric relay has an operating coil 4 with a magnetic core 2 and yoke-piece 1, a chamber 6 containing mercury 7 being mounted between the end of the core and the yoke and an armature being mounted within the mercury chamber. The lower portion of the armature is surrounded by insulating material 10 so that normally there is no contact between it and the mercury a projection G of the armature being surrounded by an adjustable spring 11 to maintain it out of contact. On energization of the electromagnet the armature is drawn down towards the polepiece which is tapered at its tip to concentrate the magnetic field adjacent to the armature. The displacement of the mercury caused by the downward movement of the armature causes it to rise above the insulating portion 10 and to contact with a conducting ring 8, so completing the controlled circuit. By adjustment of the tension of the spring 11, the value of the current at which this takes place may be varied.
