Abstract

348,276. Feeding webs. DICKHAUT, C. A., 120, North 5th Avenue, Highlam Park, New Brunswick, New Jersey, U.S.A. March 10, 1930, No. 7744. [Class 100 (i).] Apparatus for transversely guiding a travelling web of cloth, paper, &c., comprises two parallel straight rollers 1, 2, Figs. 3 and 4, under and over which the web passes and which are spaced apart on a frame 11 which is movable about a central pivot 15 under the control of a feeler device engaging the edge of the web. The frame 11 is connected by a rod 32 to a diaphragm 24 forming one side of a chamber 23<1> which is connected to a vacuum pump 26, Fig. 3, and, by a pipe 27, to a nipple 56, Fig. 7, having a valve seat 54 controlled by a valve 53 carried by a lever 48 provided with a pair of spaced-apart fingers 72, 73 engaging the edge of the web. An adjustable spring 35 on the rod 32 acts in opposition to the vacuum in the chamber 231 and the parts are so set that normally the valve 53 admits an amount of air to the chamber 231 such that the rollers 1, 2 are at right-angles to the run of the web. If the web deviates to either side, the corresponding movement of the fingers 72, 73 causes the valve to admit more or less air to the chamber 23<1> resulting in a movement of the frame 11 in a direction to restore the web to its correct path. A single feeler finger may be employed but the pair of fingers 72, 73 prevents actuation of the control by the passage of a small irregularity such as the torn portion 75, Fig. 3. To prevent excessive vacuum in the chamber 23<1>, the end 36 of the rod 32 may extend into the chamber and be caused to actuate a release valve 37.
