Abstract

362,945. Feeding webs. HOLMES & CO., Ltd., J. H., North Drive, Hebburn-on- Tyne, and TRAVERS, D. LE M., 29, Clayton Road, Newcastle-on-Tvne. Sept. 11, 1930, No. 27132. [Class 100 (i).] In a web-roll braking- device for printing- machines in which an apron or series of bands engaging the roll surface is anchored at one end and attached at the other end to a rotatable drum, the rotation of the drum is controlled pneumatically. The drum C, Fig. 1, to which one end of the apron &c. B is secured, is geared by pinions G<1>, G to a shaft carrying a pulley E<1> connected by a band E to the rod of a piston D<1> in a cylinder D which is connected by a pipe J to a suction main H. A spring D<2> in the cylinder keeps the band E taut. The pipe K is provided with a control valve K of any known type in which the setting of its regulating stem K<1> corresponds to a definite pressure on its output side, and the stem is connected to a lever L pivoted at one end to a nut M adjustable by a screw M<1>, and at the other end to the armature N<1> of a solenoid N adapted to be energized upon stoppage of the printing-machine to open the valve K fully so as to apply maximum pressure of the apron B upon the roll A. The normal pressure of the apron is varied by adjusting the screw M<1>. In a modification of the valve control, Fig. 2, the pipe J is provided with a valve K, adjustable only by a screw M<2>, and a byepass pipe 0 containing a separate valve P which is normally closed but is opened by a solenoid N<2> upon stoppage of the printing- machine. In a further form of valve control, the stem of the valve may be connected to one end of a bell-crank lever the other end of which carries a roller over which the web passes so that the valve is automatically controlled in accordance with changes in the web tension. A pressure system may be employed instead of a vacuum system and the valve K may be operated electrically from any convenient point.
