Abstract

346,206. Valves; valve gear. SERSTE, J. E., 83, Rue de Wautier, Laeken, Brussels. May 15, 1930, No. 15016. Convention date, May 18, 1929. [Class 7 (vi).] The cylinder is provided with a movable head 4 having a sleeve extension adapted to cover the exhaust ports 5 and to be moved by the pressure of the burnt gases so as to uncover these ports when an abutment is released. The abutment is constituted by the surfaces 27 of a knuckle joint 24, which are held in contact with each other by a cam 28 engaging a pin 30 on the upper member of the knuckle joint. The two parts of the joint are pivoted together at 25, the upper part being connected at 23 to a fixed bracket 22, and the lower part by a pin and slot 26 to the movable head 4. The cam 28 locks the parts in the position shown in Fig. 1 during the admission, compression, and firing strokes, the cylinder pressure being taken up by the pin 23 ; but during the exhaust stroke, the cam releases the pin 30, allowing the knuckle joint to be folded by the action of the exhaust gases lifting the movable head 4 until the surfaces 33 of the joint come into contact. Inlet may be controlled by a second sleeve valve 10 formed with ports 7, 11, through which the charge is admitted from a chamber 9, when the valve is opened against a spring 13 by the incoming gases.
