Abstract
Mercaptobenzothiazole and its nuclear derivatives are prepared by treating a salt, e.g. the sodium, potassium, or ammonium salt, of o-aminothiophenol or a nuclear derivative with an acid other than carbonic acid or hydrogen sulphide, e.g. hydrochloric or sulphuric acid, in the presence of carbon bisulphide. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the preparation of mercaptobenzothiazoles by heating "nascent" aminothiophenol in the presence of carbon bisulphide, e.g. by reducing a salt of aminothiophenol, such as an alkali salt or diortho-diamino-diphenyl-disulphide, to aminothiophenol in the presence of carbon bisulphide. Examples are given according to which (1) the sodium salt of aminothiophenol is mixed with carbon bisulphide and treated with hydrogen sulphide; (2) carbon dioxide saturated with carbon bisulphide is passed through a mixture of amidothiophenol and sodium hydroxide; (3) diortho-diamino-diphenyl-disulphide, prepared by heating aniline with sulphur under a reflux condenser, is treated with hydrogen sulphide or sodium hydrosulphide. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
