Abstract
341,837. Pedal crank driving- mechanism. PAYNE, A. E. H., Mons, Leinster Walk, Kildare, Ireland. June 30, 1930, No. 19774. [Class 136 (ii).] In pedal-crank driving-mechanism for cycles &c. each pedal is mounted on a crank 5 that is pivoted at 29 to a short arm 3 fixed on the usual crank shaft 2, the crank 5 being adapted to rock relatively to the short arm 3 between the limit stops 7, 8 of a sleeve or the like, without appreciably varying the throw, the pivotal connection being so located that each driven pedal obtains additional leverage at certain parts of the stroke and the driving actions of the two pedals overlap, dead-centre positions being avoided. The crank 5 is moved from the stop 7 to the stop 8 by means of an antifriction wheel 13 on a member 10, which is pivoted at 38 to the arm 3, and is actuated by means of an eccentric cam 17 bolted to the cycle &c. frame and acting on an antifriction wheel on the same shaft 39 as the wheel 13. The crank 5 is pivoted on a spindle secured to the arm 3 and formed with an external thread to which lubricant is passed through radial holes leading from a central bore in the spindle.
