Abstract

335,137. Miller, D. L., and Pelton, W. E. Jan. 11, 1930. Axes.-Axe handles are formed with a bifurcated guard head and latching device to hold the cutting blade in an open position or a closed protected position. In one form the pivoted end 8 of the cutting blade 5, Fig. 1, is formed with a pair of sockets or notches 11 into which a spring arm 10 fits. A modification consists in a locking dog 23, Fig. 5, maintained in a notch by a coiled spring and lifted by ears 22 which project through openings in a hammer head 19 enclosing the locking device. In a further modification a bell crank lever 40, Fig. 9, is pivoted to the axe head, and its lower end held by a coil spring 44 forcing the upper end into notches 34, 35 on the blade.
