Abstract

Carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, sulphur dioxide, or carbon oxysulphide is removed from a gas by scrubbing the gas successively with two aqueous alkaline solutions which are withdrawn from their scrubbing zones and regenerated separately by a stream of a stripping medium which passes first through one solution and then through the other, the regenerated solutions being returned to their respective scrubbing zones. Preferably the stripping medium passes first through the solution which has made second contact with the gas being treated. In one embodiment of the invention the first solution contains potassium carbonate and the second solution mono-ethanolamine, the stripping medium being steam. The regeneration may be effected in two separate regeneration vessels or in one vessel divided into an upper and a lower zone, one solution being supplied to and withdrawn from each zone.
