Abstract

331,611. Beck, H. Jan. 26, 1929, [Convention date]. Locks, permutation.-A lock for the steering- pillar of a motor-car comprises a casing which is formed in one piece with a lateral extension 3 which encloses opposite sides of a combination device. The extension 3 carries a locking sleeve 13, which is recessed at 13<a> to prevent its removal, and a sliding bolt 5. In the unlocked position, the bolt 5 engages a sleeve M which is adapted to fit tightly either the steering-pillar or an auxiliary sleeve on the steering pillar. The combination lock comprises a locking bolt 5 with four grooves 7 and two locking balls 6 which engage the second and fourth grooves in the locked position and the first and third in the unlocked position. The bolt 5 is slotted at 15 and is adapted to receive two side pieces 11<a> of a spring-operated sliding member 11. The side pieces 11<a> are screw threaded to engage a bush 20 which is adapted to be rotated by a head 22. The bush 20 is connected by a ratchet to a cover K which covers the numeral rings when set and is operated either by the bush 20 or independently. In an alternative construction, the grooves 7 are formed in an extension of the sliding member 11 which allows relative movement between the bolt and the member 11 in the locked position. To lock the wheel, the combination is set and the head 22 turned until the sliding member 11 forces the bolt 5 into a recess in the steering pillar. The locking bolt may be secured in the unlocked position by a spring ball catch 25 or by a bolt which is operated by a handle, and carries a device which interrupts the ignition when the steering-pillar is locked. The handle prevents operation of the rings until the device is in operation.
