Abstract
201,829. Wise, S. Nov. 15, 1922. Guarding against unauthorized use.-The steering hand wheel of a motor vehicle is looked by a fitting comprising a gear case cover 1, which screws over the top of the gear case of a Ford steering-mechanism and is prevented from being unscrewed by a pin 2, and a cover plate 4 which surrounds the hub of the hand wheel underneath the spokes and is pressed under a projecting lip on the member 1. The plate 4 provides a concealed bearing for the pin 9 of the link 8 which carries the lock plate 13. The latter is passed upwards between two spokes of the wheel, over the top of the hub and down between two spokes on the other side, before being secured to the plate 4 by a lock. The lock plate fills the entire space between the spokes of the wheel at the points where it passes through them, and is connected to the link 8 by a concealed pin 19, projecting flanges on the plate being turned over the ends of the pin. The lock is seated in a circular well 20 in the lock plate, which engages a hemispherical depression in the plate 4. The bolt 26 will pass through a slot in the plate 4 in one position only, and is rotated by means of a barrel 27 engaging the slotted bolthead 22. The barrel, which is rotated by means of a key, is maintained in the well 20 by a ferrule forming a driving fit with the walls of the well.
