Abstract

Window frames; sliding window opening and closing apparatus; sashes balanced ratus; sashes balanced by weights; pocket pieces.-The hollow jambs, lintel, and sill of a window frame are made of bent sheet metal in trough section to house suitable actuating or balancing means, &c., and are provided with sash guides i, i<1>, i<2> and pocket pieces &c. x<1>. The jambs may be secured to the lintel and sill by long bolts p<1>, projections on the sill and depressions in the lintel being adapted to engage the jamb if desired. Sash weights j<1> supported by pulleys l<1> and hangers l<2> and hand-operated pinions f engaging racks formed on the sashes, also antifriction rollers h, are housed in the hollow jamb. A central division may be formed in the jamb by a bead inserted in a groove and a portion may be removable to permit removal of the sash. The guides may also be formed by grooves in the frame engaging rolled edges on the sashes as shown in Fig. 11. The removable lintel, cover and pocket pieces x<1> may be secured by a hinge or groove at one edge and screws p at the opposite side. The pulleys may be spaced on spindles passing through the jambs or supported by sheet metal brackets supported in projections pressed out from the jambs. The sash cord may be secured by a knot engaged in a keyhole slot in the sash or may be clamped by means of a grooved wooden block to the top rail of the sash. The sashes may be constructed as described in Specification 321,228 and 325,252.
