Abstract

331,054. Nichols, T. W. Jan. 3, 1929. Fixed-abutment type; movable-abutment type; back-pressure, reducing; discharge and suction passages for pumps; packing drums.-A rotary pump or compressor, particularly for use as a vacuum or condensate pump for a steam-engine condenser, comprises a rotating ring c, Fig. 3, in mesh with a toothed rotor b having radiallysliding packing-vanes l up to the number of teeth in the rotor, the teeth compressing the gas and the vanes separating the teeth and being prevented from moving into the spaces in the ring c. The. vanes may have adjustable and interchangeable strips of hard metal and may consist of two or more independently-slidable plates. The vanes may be retained by being made wider than the ring spaces, or by the provision of end flanges or of pins p, Fig. 5, working within recesses b<2> in each end of the rotor. The condensed water may accumulate in a pocket h of the outlet e, small holes h<1> allowing sufficient water to pass to the ring c and fill the clearance spaces when the teeth are in mesh. The rotor engages a crescent block d. For slow-running machines, the outlet ports t, t<1> may have non-return valves u, u<1> formed from spring plate. In a modification of the crescent form, Fig. 1, ports k are provided in the ring c to deliver gas from the space k<1> where the teeth mesh. Extra inlet and outlet ports j, j<1> may be provided from the casing to the space between the ring and the rotor. The ring and the rotor may be carried by the end covers of the casing, spring-pressed packing rings being provided to prevent leakage. The ring may be shrouded all round and the inlet and outlet arranged at the ends of the rotors.
